Chennai: A techie, battling losses suffered in online trading, used pepper spray on a woman pedestrian and tried to snatch her gold chain near a foot over bridge at Sanatorium in Tambaram on Saturday.
Kuppusamy 46, of Pammal, approached her, used pepper spray on her face and tried to snatch her chain. He had lost lakhs of rupees in online trading and had sold his house in Pammal for ₹60 lakh to clear his debts. But he lost the proceeds through further trading.
When Bhuvaneswari raised alarm, the people she had given sweets to and other passers-by chased and nabbed him and handed him over to Tambaram police. During interrogation, police found that Kuppusamy worked as a project manager at an IT company on the Old Mahabalipuram Road. He then bought pepper spray and tried chain-snatching for the first time. Tambaram police registered a case and remanded him in judicial custody.
