Lucknow police commissioner Tarun Gauba visited marketplaces and interacted with shopkeepers and city residents
Lucknow: Moving beyond conventional police patrolling and security inspections, Lucknow Police Commissioner Tarun Gauba has introduced a more citizen-centric approach to policing by personally walking through crowded marketplaces, interacting with shopkeepers and the public, greeting people and enquiring about their well-being ahead of Diwali . The initiative, which combines security surveillance with direct public engagement, marks a departure from routine ceremonial foot patrolling, where senior police officers inspect security arrangements and move on. The exercise was undertaken as part of the heightened security arrangements for Dhanteras and Diwali, when markets across the city witness a massive influx of shoppers and business activity. Gauba, accompanied by senior police officers and a sizeable police contingent, began his foot patrol from Koneshwar Crossing, proceeding through Chowk towards the prominent bullion market and the main commercial market. Gauba inspected security arrangements, assessed police deployment and traffic management. He sought people’s feedback on local security arrangements and assured them that the police would remain alert and accessible throughout the festive period.
On Friday, he was seen in Hazratganj and interacting with traders.

“The Police Commissioner’s approach of combining conventional security patrolling with direct interaction with citizens is significant at a time when festive policing is often associated primarily with barricading, deployment and surveillance,” said Vikas Mehrotra, a trader in Chowk. Special attention is being paid to bullion markets, jewellery shops, shopping centres and major commercial establishments, where large numbers of people are expected to visit for festive purchases. The exercise also provided senior officers an opportunity to receive feedback from people and traders about their security concerns and the challenges they face during the festive rush.
