NEW DELHI: Delhi woke up to a blanket of toxic haze on Diwali morning, with the city’s air quality nearing the ‘severe’ category as the Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 383. Of the 54 air quality monitoring stations across the city, 24 recorded readings in the ‘severe’ category, while the remaining stations reported ‘very poor’ air quality. Jahangirpuri recorded the highest AQI at 450, followed by RK Puram at 448, according to the Sameer app. The AQI fell from 382 on Friday to 369 on Saturday, but remained close to the threshold of 401, at which air quality is classified as ‘severe’. Several monitoring stations had already recorded AQI readings above 400. The Air Quality Early Warning System (EWS) for Delhi has forecast that pollution levels are likely to remain in the ‘severe’ category on November 8 and 9. An AQI between zero and 50 is considered ‘good’, 51 to 100 ‘satisfactory’, 101 to 200 ‘moderate’, 201 to 300 ‘poor’, 301 to 400 ‘very poor’, and 401 to 500 ‘severe’, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
The city’s air quality had deteriorated after showing a marginal improvement over the previous two days. The outlook for the following six days suggests that air quality could fluctuate between the ‘severe’ and ‘very poor’ categories, indicating that the city is likely to continue experiencing high pollution levels.
