The victim was made to touch the feet of kanwariyas present at the spot before being handed over to the police in the presence of a Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) member, according to eyewitnesses. Chamarua chowki in-charge Atish Jain, who was present at the scene, said the confrontation began when the bike-borne man entered the designated Kanwar yatra route. Jain said the kanwariyas asked the man to apologise, after which he complied and was allowed to leave. “The incident happened two days ago, and no legal action has been initiated against either party so far,” Jain said, adding the matter was resolved on the spot after police counseled both groups.

Bystanders intervened to defuse tensions between both sides. Jain dismissed rumours regarding the incident, clarifying that allegations of a kanwar getting damaged during the dispute were baseless. Police are currently investigating a video of the episode circulating on social media with misleading claims. Download the TOI App.
