Bijnor: A 75-year-old retired professor allegedly died by suicide after jumping into the Ganga from Bijnor Ganga Barrage on Friday evening.
- Tyagi was allegedly facing a case registered in 2023 under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and other sections of the IPC in connection with a land dispute in Daranagar Ganj area.
Eyewitnesses said some policemen were near the barrage bridge when they were informed that a man identified as Pramod Kumar Tyagi had jumped into the river from Gate No. Tyagi was a resident of Geeta Nagri Colony in Bijnor city and had retired as the head of the Zoology department at Vardhman College, according to police. Police immediately called in divers to search for him. His body was recovered near a pillar of an under-construction bridge close to the barrage. He is survived by his wife, a son and two daughters. Both his daughters are married, while his son works outside the district. Police had submitted a final report in the case, which was subsequently challenged by the complainant in a local court.
Investigation Underway Following Death Incident
City circle officer Abhay Kumar Pandey confirmed that the deceased’s body was sent for post-mortem examination. The circumstances surrounding the death are currently under investigation. After the post-mortem was completed on Saturday, the body was returned to the family for cremation.
