Kochi: The LDF councillors have protested against the corporation’s decision to hike sanitary waste collection charges to Rs 20 per kg. The corporation has decided to limit the subsidised rate of Rs 12 per kg for collecting sanitary waste to BPL families and bedridden patients.
During the LDF regime, only Rs 12 was collected and an incinerator was set up at Brahmapuram to treat bio-waste. It takes up to 20 days to collect waste after booking.
However, the UDF administration limited the subsidy,” said V A Sreejith, LDF parliamentary party, Kochi corporation. People have to bring waste from home to various points,” Sreejith said. The mayor unilaterally hiked the rate and walked out from the council meeting held last week, Sreejith said.
“The corporation should withdraw the anti-people decision to increase the sanitary waste collection charge. The waste collection responsibility has been given to a company called Success. “The firm was entrusted without inviting any tender or expression of interest. They do not have facilities including vehicles for waste collection. In violation of rules, the corporation-owned vehicle was also handed over to the company. Door-to-door waste collection has gone haywire.
