The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

Lucknow: BJP MLA Rajeshwar Singh on Wednesday questioned the Congress ’s record on women’s rights, alleging that the party had double standards on issues concerning personal laws, equality and constitutional rights.

Singh said Congress should explain why the Rajiv Gandhi govt enacted the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Divorce) Act, 1986, after the Shah Bano judgment, and whether political considerations influenced the decision. He also questioned Congress’s opposition to key provisions of the 2019 law criminalising triple talaq. He asked why Congress, despite being in govt for decades, did not take concrete steps towards the Uniform Civil Code envisaged in the Constitution. He also questioned the different approaches to reforms in Hindu and Muslim personal laws.

He said women’s rights should not become a matter of political convenience or vote-bank considerations. Singh credited the Modi govt with legislative action against triple talaq and said genuine women’s empowerment required equal dignity, justice and constitutional rights for all women, irrespective of religion.
