Madurai: A 50-year-old woman was arrested for killing her son three months ago and burying his body behind their house at Varichiyur near Madurai.
Investigators said she initially gave conflicting accounts before admitting to assaulting her son with an iron rod about three months ago. She told police that Raja frequently sought money from her while under the influence of alcohol. Police said Ayyammal later buried the body in a pit dug for a septic tank behind the house.
Police, who regularly monitored Raja as he was a notorious criminal, found that he had been missing for several months. Inquiries into his whereabouts raised suspicion that he was killed. She also alleged that he repeatedly tried to behave inappropriately with her. Karuppayurani police registered a case and arrested her. Further investigation is under way.
A police team visited the house on Tuesday and detained Ayyammal for questioning. Police, accompanied by forensic specialists and medical officers, are scheduled to exhume the body on Thursday.
The victim, Raja, 32, alias Mettupatti Raja, had more than 22 cases pending against him. He was living with his mother, Ayyammal, after his wife and child left the house due to alleged harassment and alcohol abuse. His father died a few months ago.
