A senior PCMC official said only one operator approached them with documents seeking permission, despite repeated appeals and warnings.
PCMC to Finalize Cable Operator Policy Amid Lack of Registration
The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) is set to finalize a policy governing cable operators in the city, where over 400 operators, including internet service and broadband providers, currently operate unregistered. Officials noted that efforts to gather input from these operators before the policy’s finalization were met with silence, highlighting the sector’s disorganization and absence of a unified association.
Despite appeals for feedback, no operators responded. Moving forward, PCMC intends to enforce compliance, taking action against those who fail to submit necessary documentation under the new regulations.
However, officials acknowledged legal challenges in enforcement, as telecom cables are classified as essential infrastructure under the Telecommunications Act, limiting the ability to remove them without due process.
A senior official said, “We have prepared a draft SOP, which is expected to be approved by the municipal commissioner next week.”
