The letter by Bidari categorically says that four of the two aircraft at NFC are around 40 years old and out of production. Similar concerns over the institution’s structural and administrative framework had been flagged in a proposal sent to the govt in 2024. The club requires modern aircraft, and a proposal seeking their acquisition has already been submitted to the state govt, Bidari mentioned. The letter also stressed that enrolment of trainee pilots has been steadily rising, increasing the need for professional management. At present, officials overseeing the flying club handle it as an additional responsibility, limiting their ability to focus on its long-term development. MADC, a state-owned enterprise that developed MIHAN Special Economic Zone, is a joint venture partner in MIHAN India Ltd, which operates Nagpur airport. MADC also manages airport development projects across Maharashtra, including facilities at Shirdi and Amravati.
Nagpur: A month after Nagpur divisional commissioner Vijayalakshmi Bidari’s office wrote a letter to the state’s chief secretary (civil aviation) expressing a lack of expertise to run Nagpur Flying Club (NFC), orders were issued on Wednesday to transfer the British-era flight training school to Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC), a state govt PSU.
Nagpur Flying Club, one of the country’s oldest pilot-training institutions, was revived following a high court directive in Dec 2006 and subsequently incorporated as a company. General Administration Department (GAD) has now directed that the flying club be handed over to MADC on an “as-is” basis. The divisional commissioner and MADC’s vice-chairman-cum-managing director will jointly prepare a detailed proposal outlining the modalities of the transfer and submit it to the govt, says the order. In the letter written in July, Bidari suggested three possible options for NFC’s future: privatisation, operation through a public-private partnership model, or transfer to a specialised organisation such as MADC.
