In a heartbreaking moment, The Never Seen 17 tapped out to Gunther and had an emotional send-off by the fans and peers alike, closing the chapter of his illustrious in-ring career. The Champ’s next appearance came at WrestleMania 42, where he served as the host for both nights. After that, Cena appeared at the WWE Backlash 2026 PLE and announced a new event named after him, ‘The John Cena Classic, ’ which is reported to begin at the end of this year. They are set to defend their titles against The Young Bucks at the upcoming All In 2026.

However, this match could have happened anyway, as revealed by AEW President and CEO Tony Khan. However, during his farewell tour, Cena had revealed that he had signed an Ambassador contract with WWE and transitioned into a behind-the-scenes role after retirement.

In an interview with MetroUK, Khan said that no one from WWE reached out to him regarding the marquee match between Cena and Edge. However, there was one particular match that the fans wanted to see, but it did not happen. It was the blockbuster encounter between Cena and one of his iconic rivals, Adam Copeland, fka Edge. The Rated-R Superstar is currently a part of WWE’s rival company, AEW. The AEW head honcho also added that he would have totally supported the idea if it had been presented to him. But when there have been opportunities to collaborate, I have been collaborative in the past. I never got asked, but if I had been presented a plan and the dates and the information of what was going on, yeah, I would have supported it.
