Indian students exploring overseas education are beginning to look beyond traditional study-abroad destinations, while also becoming more specific about the courses and value propositions they associate with individual countries, Leap Scholar’s latest student insights indicate.
The clearest pattern is visible in Germany, where Computer Science accounted for around 23% of Germany-focused conversations and Data Science another 16%. Together, the two fields appeared in close to 39% of conversations, pointing to a strong technology-led interest among students considering the country. Computer Science featured in around 15% of Ireland-focused conversations, Data Science in around 11%, and Business Analytics in around 9%. Around 2.5% of all counselling conversations referenced countries outside the standard shortlist, including France, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Austria, Belgium, Spain and Latvia.
A similar specialisation pattern is emerging in Ireland, although with a stronger analytics tilt. The concentration suggests students are increasingly associating individual destinations with particular academic pathways rather than evaluating countries only at a broad level. At the same time, affordability is shaping interest beyond the established European destinations. In Italy-focused conversations, students referenced free or near-free public university tuition in a pattern similar to Germany, indicating early interest in the country as another lower-cost European study option. The wider destination pool is also beginning to expand. together they point to a study-abroad market that is becoming more fragmented and deliberate While these destinations remain smaller individually. Rather than simply asking which country is most popular, students appear to be increasingly evaluating destinations based on a combination of course preference, affordability and academic fit.
This suggests the next phase of Indian study-abroad demand may be defined less by one destination replacing another, and more by students building increasingly specialised shortlists across a broader set of countries.
