Slim gaming laptops are increasingly being bought for work, not play.
The RTX 5070 alongside it is the part that makes this work at all: near 100 watts it can be fed properly inside a body this thin, where a 250-watt chip demands a chassis built around its own appetite. The 5070 carries the same generation of RT cores and Tensor cores as the 5090 sitting above it, the same DLSS 4, the same frame generation, the same neural rendering work. Slim 70-class machines start around Rs 3 lakh and climb past Rs 3.5 lakh, while identical silicon inside a thicker box costs meaningfully less—the gap is the tax on the industrial design.
Because it had no other setting, the old arrangement had a laptop chip running flat out to render a browser tab. Because for most of that day it is one, what that buys is a machine which spends a full working day behaving like a low-power laptop,.
The trade buys a laptop that plays like a gaming machine when told to, plugged in or, within reason, not. Nobody planned the part where ordinary work went GPU-shaped. Marketing managers cut video. Journalists sit in Lightroom running denoise passes. Architecture students live inside Twinmotion. Anyone who has tried a local model in the past year learned fast that video memory, not system RAM, decides whether it loads at all. Even a call with background blur leans on hardware the ultrabook spent a decade proudly leaving out. Intel’s Core Ultra parts are where it starts. The current ones spread work across efficiency cores and hand off background jobs like blur on a call or live captions to an NPU that barely registers on the battery. Then something asks for more and the restraint disappears. Frames come off the wall away from a socket. They don’t fall through the floor, and that is newer than it sounds. What the tier doesn’t cost anyone is the feature list. That wasn’t always the arrangement. There was a time when buying below the flagship meant waiting a generation for the software to arrive, if it arrived at all. What separates the parts now is scale rather than capability: fewer cores, less memory, less bandwidth to move it around. Everything the flagship does, this does more slowly, and slowly is a very different complaint from not at all. Something has to give at this power level, and it gives in memory. Tight at 1600p with ray tracing on, tighter for larger local models, and no upscaler ever built has talked its way past a memory wall. The engineering across the class has earned its reputation. Aluminium where there used to be moulded plastic, vapour chambers doing work that once needed sheer volume, weights sitting under two kilos, finishes that no longer look like somebody’s modded rig. Every generation shaves off another few percent of thickness. That thinness is a line item, though.
Because games demanded it, and a port selection nobody amputated in the name of a millimetre, fast silicon, generous video memory, cooling with somewhere to put the heat, panels running at 240Hz. Look at what people carry into offices, lecture halls, or even holidays and most of it is still an ultrabook. Lately, though, something else keeps turning up beside them. Thin, plainly finished, quietly expensive, with a graphics chip inside that has no obvious business being there. Slim gaming laptops, as the industry files them, though almost nobody buying one uses the phrase. Neither half of the laptop market spent the last decade selling that. A colourist wants precisely that. So does anyone rendering geometry, or running a model locally.
