Udupi : Udupi Town police have arrested two persons in connection with an extortion and threat case involving a demand for Rs 5 lakh over a purported diamond transaction.

The complainant received a WhatsApp call on July 2 from an unidentified person speaking in Hindi, according to police. The caller said that the complainant’s son had failed to pay Rs 5 lakh in connection with a diamond transaction. Based on the complaint, Udupi Town police registered a case under Sections 308(1)(E) and 351(4) of the BNS. Police arrested Sajid , a resident of Shivalli village, on July 20, and Syed Saif Ahmed,40, of Tumakuru district, on Wednesday.

The complainant told the caller that his son had died eight years ago, and that he was unaware of any such transaction. He also said he was unable to pay the amount. The caller demanded that the complainant settle the dues. Acting on the directions of SP Hari Ram Shankar, and under the guidance of Additional SP Sudhakar Naik and Udupi Subdivision DSP Belliappa, a special team led by Udupi Town police inspector Mahesh Prasad P took up the investigation. Syed Saif Ahmed has been taken into police custody for further investigation.

Both were produced before the competent courts and remanded in judicial custody.
