New Delhi: Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Thursday carried out anti-encroachment drives in Sadar Bazaar and Zamrudpur, near Greater Kailash I, removing roadside illegal structures.

MCD and the local police deployed more than 60 staff and machinery. MCD said more than 10 trucks of construction and demolition waste were removed from the site. The traders also approached police and MCD, seeking removal action. In a separate action, MCD cleared encroachments from heritage monument sites in Zamrudpur village in south Delhi. Walls inside the heritage monuments were demolished, while illegal structures being used as godowns and for cattle rearing were removed. Three iron gates obstructing access to the heritage buildings were also dismantled. The remaining debris will be cleared within a few days. Download the TOI App.

The drive was undertaken in connection with a matter pending before the Supreme Court .

In Sadar Bazaar, the civic body’s maintenance and licensing department conducted the drive in Teliwara, a day after a dispute between shopkeepers and street vendors in the busy market, according to sources. Shopkeepers in Pratap Market shut their establishments and protested Wednesday, following an argument with street vendors allegedly operating without permission, according to posts circulating on social media. The action came amid complaints from traders over unauthorised vendors on the road.
