Recreational sports are becoming an increasingly popular part of urban life, with Kolkata’s turfs, arenas, run clubs and accessible sporting spaces drawing people who may not consider themselves athletes. From after-work football and box cricket to running and casual golf, the city is combining movement with fun and socialising. On National Sports Day, we explore how this is reshaping leisure, connection and everyday fitness.
“Turfs and arenas are becoming spaces where young adults can work out, unwind and catch up with friends, making recreational sport a more enjoyable alternative to conventional fitness routines,” says Atul Sharma of Pixity Turf. Dutt points to a broader shift in health habits: “People are sleeping early, waking up early, having their food on time and are more aware of their protein intake. ” The attraction, however, is not always about chasing fitness goals. “Playing with friends makes fitness feel less like a chore,” says Priyanka Sen, a regular at turfs. Running is following a similar trajectory as more people are signing up for races or a morning run, says Sreyas Agarwal, co-founder of Calcutta Run Club. > Hyrox-style workouts
