Among other announcements for the department, minister Rajkumar said a ‘grid of roads’ will be prepared for the expanded Chennai metropolitan area, covering 5,904sqkm, at an estimated cost of ₹12 crore. The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority will undertake road improvement and reconstruction work at the Sathangadu Iron and Steel Market Complex and the Koyambedu Wholesale Market Complex at a cost of ₹ 20 crore. At the Koyambedu wholesale market, additional shops will be constructed on 22,000sqft between the L, M and N blocks of the vegetable market at a cost of ₹7.50 crore. Drinking water connections will also be provided to every shop at the market at an estimated cost of ₹10 crore.
Payments can be made directly to drivers through cash/UPI or through UPI platforms on the app, an official said. Chennai: To ensure fair fares for passengers and protect the livelihoods of autorickshaw and taxi drivers, the Cumta (Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority) plans to introduce a digital-meter-based app. The proposed app will allow passengers to request an auto, with drivers accepting bookings through the platform. A digital meter will then be activated for the journey, displaying the distance, time, and applicable fare, allowing passengers to see how the fare is calculated rather than negotiating with the driver. The meter will assist passengers taking autos directly from stands, making the system applicable beyond app-based bookings. It is not clear whether registration on the app will be made mandatory for the drivers. Cumta will manage driver onboarding, fare revisions and data, while complaints can be lodged through the app or a toll-free number. The system will update fares periodically based on fuel prices and inflation, making fare revisions easier to implement uniformly. The plan is to guide planned urban development, prevent future traffic bottlenecks and ensure smoother movement of traffic as the metropolitan region expands. The move assumes significance as development increasingly extends beyond the existing urban core, making advance identification and integration of road corridors critical.
