Kanpur: A 15-year-old girl was swept away in strong currents while crossing a flooded ramp between Puraini and Uparhanka villages in Hamirpur district on Sunday evening. Police, revenue officials, divers and villagers searched for her until late evening but could not trace her.

Priyanshi (15), daughter of Puraini resident Sadhuram, was returning on foot from a dera in the fields when a strong current swept her away. Kumar said the search would continue until Priyanshi was found. About one foot of water was flowing over the ramp on the Puraini-Uparhanka route. Raghavendra and Dina, who were at the ramp, tried to rescue her but failed. They then alerted police. Jalalpur police station in charge Ravi Kumar and Tehsildar Ravindra Pal reached the spot. Police, divers and villagers searched along the drain’s banks and up to a check dam about one km away as the water flow subsided. She is the youngest of six sisters and one brother.
