Two men, accused in a cow slaughter case from August 25, were shot in the legs during a police encounter in Kanpur Dehat. The incident underscores ongoing tensions surrounding animal rights and agricultural practices in the region.
The three were wanted after an alleged cow slaughter incident in Raniya police station area on Aug 25.
Police said the accused opened fire, prompting retaliatory firing in self-defence. Acting on an informant’s tip-off, Rania police began checking near Rind river from Raipur Kukhat and encountered the three wanted accused. Fazal Karim and Salman Babu suffered bullet injuries to their legs and were taken to hospital. Police chased and arrested the third accused, Irfan. A case had been registered under relevant sections of Uttar Pradesh Govadh Nivaran Adhiniyam, following which raids were conducted on the superintendent of police’s instructions. Police registered another case under relevant sections over the encounter, arrests and recoveries, and initiated further legal action.
