Kolkata: Bengal Police STF arrested a Bangladeshi national from Baguiati on Saturday night

The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

The suspect, Russell Ahmed, was handed over to Bidhannagar South Police Station for interrogation and legal proceedings. Kolkata: Bengal Police STF arrested a Bangladeshi national from Baguiati on Saturday night in connection with an alleged international kidney trafficking ring.

Ahmed was arrested in 2024 by Delhi Police in connection with a similar organ smuggling racket. Investigators revealed that Ahmed’s name surfaced during the interrogation of another key suspect, Prabhas Mondal, who was arrested on Aug 18 after the father of a young victim lodged a formal police complaint, alleging that his son was fraudulently operated on for a kidney. During the operation, police seized a detailed rate chart for kidney sales, alongside documents from several private hospitals across states specifying their organ requirements. Police disclosed that he had entered India illegally and obtained forged Indian identification documents to rent a house in Bengal, which served as an operational base to expand the cross-border network.

Ahmed was produced in a Bidhannagar court on Sunday, where cops sought his custody to uncover the full extent of the syndicate.
