The arrested are Benny Lloyd, 48, of Puthiyodath House, Poolakkadavu; Rajad, 38, of Dukkir Manzil, Parappil; Nandakumar, 25, of Thattayathazhatheparambil House, Ramanattukara; and Adhnul Shahim, 22, of Koyikkalparambil House, Kottaparamb, Chalappuram. MSP personnel Vishakh and Adarsh were deployed along with Town police near the main gate of Mananchira Square from the evening of Aug 29, according to the police. Around 7.40pm, police received a complaint that some persons were collecting money inside the square. Benny Lloyd has around 25 cases registered against him in connection with drug use, drug sales, theft, robbery and other offences.
Police said the accused were habitual drug users and were involved in several cases. Rajad, Nandakumar and Adhnul Shahim are also facing several cases related to drug use and sale, motorcycle theft, robbery, assault and other offences, police said. When they were asked to leave the place, they allegedly challenged the police.
As the officers attempted to remove them, one of the accused allegedly stabbed Adarsh on the upper part of his right palm with a syringe he was carrying. The accused then fled the spot. The injured policeman was taken to Kozhikode Medical College Hospital for treatment.
