Bengaluru: A 55-year-old woman travelling home on a BMTC bus from Electronics City fell victim to a distraction theft after two women boarded the vehicle with a child, created a scene by spilling pills and stole her gold jewellery worth Rs 4.5 lakh. Roopa (name changed) had gone to Krishnagiri in Tamil Nadu on Aug 29 to attend a marriage. The stolen valuables included a 52-gram chain and a 30-gram pair of bracelets.

She returned returned the next day and got down at Electronics City. She took a BMTC bus and was travelling towards Garvebhavi Palya, southeast Bengaluru, around noon when two women and a child boarded the bus and sat near her. They threw pills near Roopa’s feet when she wasn’t noticing and one of them handed the child to Roopa while pretending to pick up the medicine. As Roopa placed her bag down and helped her, the other woman took advantage of the distraction and stole a necklace box containing gold jewellery from the victim’s bag. The suspects got off near Hosa Road bus stop. It was only later, when Roopa picked up her bag, that she realised the box was missing.
