Belagavi : The first additional civil judge and JMFC Court in Chikkodi directed an accused who pleaded guilty to a public nuisance offence to plant 50 trees and ensure their upkeep, in addition to paying the prescribed fine. Under the order, the accused must plant 25 saplings on the court premises and another 25 on the premises of the Sadalga police station. Failure to complete the community service will result in 30 days of simple imprisonment, the court said.

The accused had consumed alcohol and created a public nuisance on a village street, according to the prosecution. The court informed him of his right to free legal aid, but he declined representation and chose to proceed without a lawyer. After being satisfied that the plea was made voluntarily and without coercion, the court recorded his statement. The court read out and explained the contents of the confession to him in a language he understood before accepting the plea. Taking his voluntary plea into consideration, the court imposed the environmental service condition along with the prescribed penalty.

When the case came up for hearing before the Chikkodi court, the accused expressed his willingness to plead guilty.
