The deceased has been identified as M Sumathi, 23, of Soolankurichi hill village in Karumanthurai. She had delivered her third child about 45 days ago. Over 100 relatives and villagers including her husband Matheawaran, 30, laid siege to Salem district collectorate in protest.
She was referred to Attur govt hospital soon after the sterilisation procedure but died without responding to treatment. They alleged that a botched surgery had caused her death and demanded justice.
