Faculty of Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) College have urged the state government to take over the institution, citing mounting financial pressure.
MKU College was established at Tallakulam in 1994 directly by the university with its own funds after obtaining University Grants Commission approval. It began with around 1,000 students and has since expanded to about 3,800 students pursuing 25 undergraduate and postgraduate arts and science programmes. Its 170 teaching and non-teaching employees, including permanent staff and those working on consolidated pay and casual terms, require around Rs12 crore a year towards salaries alone. The state government last year took over 41 constituent colleges attached to universities including Bharathiar University, Bharathidasan University and Alagappa University.
Murugesan said faculty recently took their concerns to Madurai TVK MLA Anban Kallanai, who raised the matter during the ongoing demand for grants session. Faculty said this does not cover even its recurring expenditure. It functions as a separate university-run unit that depends largely on fees collected from students, leaving it outside the takeover framework, faculty said.
