CEO Dara Khosrowshahi announced the layoffs in an internal email on September 2, later published on Uber’s newsroom, and the framing will sound oddly familiar to anyone who has followed Amazon over the past two years. The cuts bring Uber’s headcount down to just under 30,000, roughly where it stood in 2021, before the company’s most recent expansion phase. Uber shares rose nearly 2% after the announcement, and analysts estimate the restructuring could free up as much as $2 billion in annual savings. Beth Galetti announced roughly 14,000 corporate role cuts in October, then another 16,000 in January 2026, describing both as continuations of the same layers-and-ownership work Jassy started.
Khosrowshahi says Uber heard this repeatedly in Pulse surveys and internal conversations. Fewer management layers. More individual contributors. Almost everyone back in an office. The line employees are circulating is this one: “I’m sure many of you have felt that you spend too much time ‘aligning’ rather than building, shipping, or serving customers. His fix is structural. There is consolidation too. Uber is folding its three Delivery Ops teams (Restaurants, Retail and Direct) into single-threaded teams at global, regional and country level, putting the P&Ls under single owners. In Tech, Core Services Engineering and Science teams are being merged, mirroring a structure Mobility and Delivery already use. Everyone affected has already been notified, except in countries with mandatory local consultation processes.
