Madurai: The district police have begun the installation of automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) surveillance cameras across 30 locations throughout the district.
Police officials said the technology will help in identifying and intercepting vehicles utilised in offences such as robberies and chain snatching. The deployment targets arterial routes, bypasses, four-lane highways, and vital border junctions. Capable of functioning day and night, these cameras can capture the registration details of fast-moving vehicles and immediately cross-reference them against centralised police databases in real time. Besides, the system is engineered to track hit-and-run offenders who attempt to evade law enforcement after causing accidents, while also ensuring stricter compliance with overall traffic regulations across the region.
Superintendent of police N Devanathan conducted a field inspection on Friday to assess operational readiness, ongoing preparations, and technical capabilities of the newly deployed surveillance network.
