In a letter to chief minister DK Shivakumar , Bellad said the state govt had declared 101 taluks as drought-hit, but included only a few taluks from eight districts in north Karnataka and Kalyana Karnataka. Bellad said that during the current kharif season, sowing was taken up in 2,71,062 hectares in Dharwad district, including 1,66,329 hectares under food grains, 55,952 hectares under oilseeds and 48,781 hectares under commercial crops. He said the district recorded a nearly 50% rainfall deficit between June and Aug.
As a result, kharif crops such as green gram, black gram and soybean have suffered severe damage, leaving farmers in distress. Dharwad: Deputy leader of the opposition in assembly, Arvind Bellad, has urged the state govt to declare all taluks in Dharwad district drought-hit. He pointed out that not a single taluk from Dharwad, Belagavi, Haveri and Kalaburagi districts was included in the list. Stating that farmers are unable to bear mounting debts, Bellad warned that the govt should act before they are driven to extreme steps.
