NASHIK: An 11-year-old boy from Mumbai’s Ghatkopar drowned in the Godavari River at Gandhi Talav in Nashik’s Panchavati area on Saturday morning. Gopal was among a 40-member group from Uttar Pradesh who are currently living in Ghatkopar, according to Panchavati police. The boy was identified as Gopal Umesh Gupta. The incident took place when four boys from the group entered the river while the women went to change their clothes. Local youths who dive into the river to collect coins thrown by devotees spotted the boys struggling in the water. The youths, along with lifeguards nearby, rescued three of the boys. A few minutes later, the group noticed that Gopal was missing. Local divers went back into the river and found him. Panchavati police have registered a case of accidental death and are investigating the incident. Download the TOI App.

The group had reached Panchavati on Saturday morning to visit temples in the area.

Gopal was taken to the district civil hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
