A Mountain of Orange Peels Was Left on Degraded Land; 15 Years Later, Scientists Could Barely Recognise the Place
In 1998, about 12,000 metric tonnes of orange peels and pulp were deposited there. In 2013, Princeton researcher Timothy Treuer discussed the forgotten site with Janzen. Aboveground woody biomass was 176% higher than in the comparison area, while woody plant species richness had roughly tripled.
Timothy Treuer described the finding as one of the rare examples of “cost-negative carbon sequestration”, because the agricultural waste disposal and forest recovery could occur together. In the 1990s, orange juice company Del Oro was operating near the Área de Conservación Guanacaste in northwestern Costa Rica. The company had a huge amount of orange peel and pulp left after processing fruit. Ecologists Daniel Janzen and Winnie Hallwachs saw an unusual opportunity. Instead of treating the waste only as something to dispose of, they proposed using it on a severely degraded piece of land inside the conservation area. The land had suffered from cattle grazing, repeated fires and poor soil. It was not a healthy, thriving forest waiting to be protected. It was a damaged landscape struggling to recover. Under an agreement, Del Oro would donate forested land to the conservation area and could place its orange waste on the degraded site for natural decomposition. The idea sounds strange until the soil is considered. The abandoned pasture had compacted, rocky and nutrient-poor soil. Orange waste contained organic matter and nutrients that could return to the ground as the material decomposed. The experiment was not simply about throwing food waste into a forest. It involved a particular degraded site and agricultural waste intended to break down naturally. That distinction matters. The researchers later described the project as an unusual example of agricultural waste being used alongside forest restoration. The experiment did not continue peacefully. A rival juice company, TicoFruit, challenged the arrangement in court. The dispute eventually reached Costa Rica’s Supreme Court, which ruled against the project. By then, the site had received the large load of orange waste, but the experiment was effectively stopped. Then something unusual happened. The site was largely forgotten. For years, nobody knew exactly what the orange-peel-covered patch would become. Treuer and Jonathan Choi eventually examined the area more closely. What they saw surprised them. The former barren-looking pasture had become difficult to walk through. Trees, vines and dense vegetation had covered the area so thoroughly that researchers struggled to find the old sign marking the experimental site. The scientists then compared the treated land with a nearby area that had not received orange waste. Their peer-reviewed study, published in Restoration Ecology, found richer soil, greater tree-species richness and substantially more woody biomass in the orange-waste area. The experiment does not mean factories can safely dump food waste into forests. It involved a specific degraded landscape, a planned agreement and material that researchers studied over time. The researchers themselves later noted that the project had not been replicated, which limits how widely its results can be applied. Still, the result raises an important question about what society calls waste. Sometimes restoration does not begin with planting thousands of trees.
