Maharajan, president of Kannanallur panchayat died after being allegedly attacked with a brick

Maharajan, president of Kannanallur panchayat died after being allegedly attacked with a brick during a dispute over drinking water supply in Kannanallur near Valliyur on Friday evening.

Tirunelveli: Tirunelveli district police arrested a man for the murder of a 68-year-old panchayat president, who was attacked with a brick, during a dispute over drinking water supply at Kannanallur near Valliyoor on Friday evening. Esakkiappan, 40, reportedly questioned pump operator Sankar after water failed to reach his household.

Police said the incident occurred when drinking water was being supplied from a public overhead tank. Police said initial investigations suggest the murder stemmed from a personal dispute related to drinking water distribution. Police said the situation in the locality remains peaceful and under control.

The deceased, Maharajan , president of Kannanallur panchayat for the past four years, was attacked near his house at Thamaraikulam South Street. Maharajan, who arrived at the spot, got into an argument with Esakkiappan over the issue. Tirunelveli district superintendent of police Vishwesh B Shastri rushed to the spot and supervised the investigation. Based on a complaint lodged by Maharajan’s wife and preliminary inquiries, Valliyoor police registered a case and arrested Esakkiappan later in the night. As a precautionary measure, additional police personnel have been deployed in sensitive areas to prevent any untoward incidents.
