On Saturday, 1,140kg of substandard ghee was seized from a Madhupura unit; 2,516kg of inedible soya sauce and other food products from a Vatva unit; and 150kg of namkeen adulterated with synthetic colour from a Vejalpur unit. Madhupura unit’s seized items — 76 tins of ghee (each weighing 15kg) — were valued at Rs 7.2 lakh. From Vatva unit, items worth Rs 1.8 lakh were seized. Vejalpur unit’s prepared namkeen was valued at Rs 30,000.
In AMC’s action, three units were sealed due to unhygienic manufacturing conditions, lack of licences, and food samples that failed quality tests. The official said, “Therefore, we have launched a campaign against ‘analogue paneer. Additionally, Gujarat Fry Centre in Chandlodia was sealed after inspections revealed it was operating without a licence. Cases under Food Safety and Standards Act will be registered against all these establishments and penalties will be imposed. Following state govt’s ban on analogue paneer, the civic body has run a focused inspection drive over the past two months targeting units manufacturing or selling imitation paneer. Five units have been sealed so far. An official from the health department stated, “The sale of ‘analogue paneer’ is rising in Ahmedabad. Some restaurants and hotels are passing off ‘analogue paneer’ as milk paneer and deceiving customers.”
