On Saturday, the Nagpur Traffic Police destroyed 372 modified and unauthorized silencers that had been seized from various vehicles. The silencers were crushed under a road roller as part of a focused initiative to combat excessively loud exhaust systems. This operation aims to prevent the repurposing of these confiscated silencers, which are often associated with noise pollution and violations of traffic regulations.
342 cases involving modified or unauthorised silencers have been detected across the city’s traffic zones in 2026 till Sept 5 and subsequent action was taken, according to traffic police. Officials said enforcement against such vehicles would be stepped up in the coming days. Under the Motor Vehicles Act , vehicles are required to comply with prescribed standards, including those relating to noise emissions. Unauthorised modifications that result in violations can attract penal action. Officials appealed to vehicle owners to avoid tampering with factory-fitted exhaust systems or installing aftermarket silencers that produce excessive noise. Download the TOI App.
