Tapovan where NMC has proposed felling of 1700 trees for developing Sadhugram- a place where sadhus are accommodated during Kumbh Mela
Earlier, the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) had proposed felling of around 1,700 trees and had also conducted hearings on the objections raised by activists and residents. The civic body had received around 900 objections, including both online and offline, related to the proposed felling of trees for developing Sadhugram at Tapovan for the upcoming Kumbh Mela . Meanwhile, NMC has planted over 10,000 trees so far at various locations as part of compensation for the trees proposed to be cut for Kumbh Mela-related works. Around 15,000 more trees are to be planted by the garden department of the civic body in the next few weeks. Kumbh Mela is slated to be held between 2026 and 2028, and the flag-hoisting of the Simhastha Kumbh Mela will be held on Oct 31, 2026. The three major Amrit Snans (holy baths) will take place between Aug and Sept in 2027. Nashik: Activists and environmentalists have decided to launch an agitation against the proposed tree felling at Tapovan as the municipal corporation has not made its stand clear on the issue. NMC, however, has still not clarified its position about the felling of trees, even two-and-a-half months after the hearing. Some activists have already moved the Bombay high court and the Pune bench of the National Green Tribunal against the proposed tree felling. Sadhus arriving for the Kumbh Mela will be accommodated at Sadhugram in Tapovan. The hearing was held in the last week of Nov last year. This has irked activists and residents who have decided to launch an agitation once again and go on a day-long hunger strike at Tapovan on Saturday.
