As the dues remained unpaid, 60 units were sealed. KMC officials said there are 103 municipal-owned units in Shahu Cloth Market and the total outstanding rent dues have mounted to around Rs 8 crore. The civic body had earlier introduced concession schemes for payment of dues accumulated between 2019 and 2026 and had repeatedly appealed to tenants to clear arrears.

Officials said the civic body had repeatedly issued notices and reminders to shopkeepers to clear pending rent but failed to get a response. Officials said similar action would be taken against other defaulters if dues remain unpaid. The action was carried out by Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC) estate department and nuisance detection squad on the instructions of municipal commissioner Dr Rajendra Bharud. Despite this, many occupants failed to make payments, prompting the enforcement drive. Following Monday’s action, the administration warned tenants occupying municipal properties across the city to immediately clear pending rent. The drive was conducted by teams from the estate, licence and property tax departments along with the nuisance detection squad. Download the TOI App.
“Before the action, the unit holders had been issued notices and reminders regarding the unpaid rent. Some of the remaining shopkeepers deposited part of their dues on Monday,” said deputy commissioner Kirankumar Dhanawde.
