The rest of Guerrilla is expected to continue working on Horizon 3, according to the report. Killzone was once a regular part of PlayStation’s lineup. Six games were released across PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and handheld consoles during the nine years following the series’ debut. But the franchise has been dormant since 2013, when Killzone: Shadow Fall launched alongside the PlayStation 4. The long gap between Killzone releases coincided with Guerrilla moving its attention to the Horizon series.
Guerrilla Games is working with an external studio on a Killzone “remaster/remake” that is still in the early stages of development. The report claims the project could be a remake or remaster of the original Killzone, which was released in 2004 for the PlayStation 2, according to a report by MP1st. Most of the studio’s staff are currently said to be working on the multiplayer game, while part of the team could move to the Killzone project after Hunter’s Gathering ships. The studio has previously explained that it wanted to try something different after spending years making gritty shooters. That shift eventually produced Horizon Zero Dawn and its follow-up, Horizon Forbidden West, moving Guerrilla away from the series that had defined much of its earlier work. When Guerrilla was asked about Killzone’s future in 2017, then-studio boss Hermen Hulst, who is now PlayStation’s studios boss, did not rule out a return. “I get asked that question [about the future of Killzone] a lot through Twitter and other social media channels,” he said. It’s a franchise and universe that we still love with a passion at Guerrilla.” “It hasn’t been easy doing something so completely different.
Sony may be preparing to bring back Killzone more than a decade after the last game in the PlayStation shooter series. The project is reportedly expected to become one of Guerrilla’s focuses after Horizon Hunter’s Gathering. However, plans around that game have allegedly changed following a shift away from live-service development. The Killzone project is reportedly being developed alongside Guerrilla’s existing work. “It’s really heartwarming to hear that there’s such a strong appetite from the loyal Killzone fanbase. Whether or not we’ve put a permanent period behind the series, it’s too early to make announcements on that. All I can say is that we’ve always loved the Killzone universe and the Killzone series, and we still do. We share that passion for the game with a lot of our fans,” Hulst added.
