Gandhinagar: To make procurement under the minimum support price (MSP) scheme more transparent and quality-driven, Gujarat govt has introduced AI-based grain analysers at 10 paddy procurement centres across four districts on a pilot basis. The technology was deployed during the kharif marketing season (2025-26) paddy procurement process in Ahmedabad, Anand, Mahisagar and Panchmahal districts as a pilot project to bring greater objectivity to the sampling and grading of paddy, an official statement said. 13,334 registrations were recorded at the 10 procurement centres covered under the pilot, according to Gujarat State Civil Supplies Corporation. The AI-based grain analysers examined 6,191 paddy samples, of which 3,379 (54.6%) were classified as Grade A and 2,812 (45.4%) as Common grade. In all, 341 samples were rejected during the process. Dholka recorded the highest rejection rate at 24%, while Viramgam reported no rejection.

This comparison is important as govt evaluates the effectiveness of the AI-based system before deciding on its wider rollout, the statement said. Wheat and rice are procured according to Food Corporation of India specifications, while MSP commodities follow the Centre’s uniform specifications. The corporation said the use of AI-based analysis, combined with stringent quality-control and cross-verification mechanisms, will help ensure that beneficiaries receive clean, unadulterated and quality foodgrains, while also strengthening public confidence in the state’s public distribution system.
These included centres at Lunawada and Santrampur in Mahisagar; Khambhat and Borsad in Anand; Dholka, Bavla, Viramgam and Sanand in Ahmedabad; and Godhra and Shehera in Panchmahal. The AI machines assess parameters including foreign matter, damaged or discoloured grains, immature or shrunken grains, admixture and moisture content. The system requires continuous electricity and one person to operate the equipment at each centre. The corporation, however, pointed out that the existing third-party procurement system involves two personnel who carry out sampling and grading using scientific equipment without requiring electricity. Under the MSP system, the state govt procures wheat, paddy, maize, jowar, bajra and ragi through graders appointed by surveying and grading agencies. Download the TOI App.
