Man gets death in 2022 Class XII student gang rape case
Madurai: The Pocso court in Tirunelveli on Tuesday sentenced a man to death for his role in the 2022 gang rape of a Class XII student. The court also sentenced two other convicts to 20 years and 13 years in prison.
Police said two of them had previous criminal cases, including cases involving attempted murder and ganja smuggling. Two other men, Chinnakutti and Murugesan, saw the incident and threatened to tell people in the girl’s town before sexually assaulting her. Chinnakutti also filmed the incident on a mobile phone and used the recording to threaten her and repeatedly rape her. Based on the student’s complaint, Palayamkottai all women police arrested all three accused. They were later detained under the Goondas Act.
Chinnakutti was sentenced to death, while Murugesan received 20 years’ imprisonment and Muneeswaran 13 years. The prosecution relied on statements recorded under the CrPC, witness accounts, medical records and forensic evidence during the trial. Based on the evidence, the court found all three guilty.
