Nashik : A special drive against single-use plastic in the city’s market yard area led to the seizure of 2.17tonnes of the banned material on Wednesday. Nashik Municipal Corporation’s solid waste management department squads also imposed penalities worth Rs10,000 during the action. NMC officials have also urged citizens to report instances of use, sale or storage of prohibited plastic so that prompt action can be taken.

Civic officials said plastic waste remains a major environmental concern as it often clogs drains, gutters and water channels, leading to sanitation and flooding issues. The operation was led by the Panchavati division’s solid waste management team under the supervision of Kiran Maru, divisional sanitation inspector, and Dr Avesh Palod, director of the solid waste management department of the municipal corporation. To address the issue, NMC will continue inspections and special enforcement drives in markets, commercial establishments, shops and other business areas. The NMC administration has appealed to residents, traders and business owners to support the anti-plastic campaign by avoiding banned plastic products and adopting eco-friendly alternatives such as cloth and paper bags.
