New Delhi: A court sentenced a man to 14 years’ rigorous imprisonment for throwing acid on his wife, observing that the consequences of an acid attack extend beyond immediate physical injuries and can remain with the survivor for life.
Additional sessions judge Prayank Nayak also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh and directed that the amount would be given to the survivor as compensation. The woman was attacked on Aug 8, 2022, when the couple were already living separately. After she returned home, around 5.30pm, the man came with acid and threw it at her.
In default of payment, the convict will undergo an additional year’s imprisonment. The court also directed Central District Legal Services Authority to determine and grant compensation to the woman in accordance with law. She went to meet her husband and they had an altercation. Her mother and a neighbour rushed her to hospital. She suffered extensive burns on her face and ear, while acid droplets also injured children playing nearby. The accused was arrested two days later. The court convicted him under Section 326A (voluntarily causing grievous hurt, permanent or partial damage, deformity, or disfigurement by using acid) of IPC and awarded the sentence, considering the gravity of the offence, extent of injuries and their long-term impact.
