CCTV grab of the alleged assault on a staffer at Relief Hospital in Palghar
Police registered a case against 17 Sena functionaries on Sunday, around 7am. The matter has since come under judicial scrutiny, prompting the Palghar police machinery to set up four teams to trace the remaining accused, who are reported to be absconding.
Police reportedly told them that their individual roles would first be verified before arresting them. A hospital employee was allegedly assaulted and the five injured govindas admitted to the ICU were forcibly taken away. Sources claimed that several of the accused, who were agitated after learning that a case had been registered against them, came to the police station the same day. However, police arrested only Gharat, while the others were allowed to leave.
The incident took place early on Sunday when Shiv Sena functionaries allegedly created a ruckus at the private hospital over the treatment of injured govindas during dahi handi . On Monday, after Shiv Sena chief Eknath Shinde expressed his displeasure over the incident and suspended Palghar city chief Rahul Gharat, some of the key accused again went to the police station, reportedly to surrender.
Palghar : The alleged laxity of Palghar police in the Relief Hospital staffer assault case has come under the scanner after it emerged that several accused had visited the police station for two consecutive days, but no arrests were made.
