Agra teen killed after failed rape bid; accused held in encounter

Mujib-ur-Rahman, a 54-year-old government primary school teacher from Bijnor, claims he was defrauded of ₹65 lakh by individuals purporting to be relatives of the late playback singer Mohammed Rafi. Rahman alleges that these individuals falsely promised to secure railway jobs for his family members and to provide a contract for running a canteen. The incident raises concerns about the exploitation of fans and the use of celebrity connections for fraudulent schemes.

SHO (Bijnor city) Avneet Maan said a case was registered against the accused under BNS sections 316(2) (criminal breach of trust) and 351(2) (criminal intimidation), based on a complaint filed by Rahman. Rahman travels to Bandra every Dec 24 to pay tribute to the legendary singer at his residence. Rahman met relatives residing at Rafi’s house 20 years ago and gradually developed close ties with them. In 2021, they claimed to have contacts with influential railway officials and promised to arrange jobs for 30 members of Rahman’s family, besides getting him a contract to operate a railway canteen if he paid up Rs 65 lakh. Acting on their assurances, Rahman claimed that he transferred around Rs 65 lakh into about a dozen bank accounts in 2021.

Rahman told TOI that he used to work in a private company in Mumbai when he met the accused. Based on Rahman’s complaint, Bijnor Kotwali city police registered a case of cheating and misappropriation against eight people — including Irfan Parvez Ahmed, his wife Farheen, their son Ubaid, and their relatives Shahana Qureshi, Rehana Qureshi, Shahnawaz Qureshi and Imad. As per Rahman’s allegations, Irfan Parvez is Mohammed Rafi’s maternal grandson. The accused allegedly befriended Rahman, a resident of Qazipada locality in Bijnor, when the latter visited Mumbai to attend Mohammed Rafi’s birth anniversary celebrations. However, despite repeated assurances over the past five years, neither the promised jobs and contract were arranged nor was the money returned. Rahman also alleged that the accused threatened him whenever he demanded his money back. He later joined as a teacher at a govt primary school in Bijnor and left the private job. He, however, used to visit Mumbai on Rafi’s birth anniversary. Download the TOI App.
