17-year-old girl rescued from New Market hotel: The wider industry impact

Howrah/Kolkata: A joint team of Howrah Rural Police and Central division of Kolkata Police have rescued a 17-year-old schoolgirl from a hotel in New Market, foiling human trafficking , orchestrated by overseas cyber fraudsters, who offered the girl a job abroad.

The girl was offered a receptionist’s job in the US with a monthly salary of Rs 3,00,000, along with educational sponsorship. They also started making ransom calls to her father, demanding Rs 5,00,000, which was reduced to Rs 3,00,000. As told by the accused, she left her mobile, switched off, at home to dodge tracking. Police said the accused, suspected to be operating from Pakistan and having Indians conduits from UP and Bihar, targeted the victim on social media by posing as members of a charitable foundation supporting underprivileged students. The girl on Tuesday left her home at Sankarhati in Jagatballavpur, saying she was going to school.
