Varanasi: Before over 600 people staying at safe places and relief camps could return home, the water level of the Ganga started increasing again on Wednesday evening, and the rising trend continued on Thursday.
As per the Central Water Commission report, against the warning level of 70.26 metres, the water level of the Ganga had crossed the 69.29-metre mark, and the rise continued at a pace of less than 1 centimetre per hour. It increased worries, especially in low-lying areas along the Varuna, where floodwaters had started to recede after the Ganga began receding after Sept 4.
ADM (finance and revenue) Sadanand Gupta said the water level in the Ganga was increasing very slowly and the rising trend was likely to stop soon. But, in view of the problems being faced by people in the flood-affected areas and local residents, all arrangements, including relief operations and camps, have been kept operational.
On Aug 22, the water level of the Ganga had started rising after touching the mark of 70.66 metres, while on Sept 2, it reached 70.38 metres. On both occasions, the water level of the Ganga crossed the warning level but started receding before touching the danger level of 71.26 metres. On Sept 3, PM Narendra Modi had also taken stock of the flood situation, while on Sept 4, CM Yogi Adityanath conducted an aerial survey and met flood victims in Varanasi. During the previous flood menace, 4,082 people from 877 families had been displaced in 16 urban localities and 24 villages. But 613 people from 147 families were still present at three relief camps in Salarpur and one in Badi Bazar, waiting to return home when the water level started rising again.
