Approach roads to Chakan MIDC at various places
Pune: More than seven months after issuing work orders, Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has moved to expedite work on six key road stretches covering around 15 km around Chakan MIDC.
In a letter to DCP (traffic) Vikrant Deshmukh , PMRDA executive engineer Shivkumar Kupal said heavy traffic on the roads was slowing down construction and causing congestion. “Once the works are completed, they will help ease traffic congestion in Chakan,” he said, seeking one-way traffic arrangements to allow the works to progress faster. PMRDA has sought traffic police permission to impose one-way traffic movement on five of these roads while work is under way.
The projects received administrative approval in Sept 2025, while work orders were issued in Feb with a 12-month deadline and an estimated expenditure of Rs 69 crore. PMRDA’s plan is to impose one-way movement on the Chikhali-Moi, Kuruli Phata-Nighoje, Khalumbre-Hyundai company, Nighoje Gaon-MIDC Phase 3 and Chakan Phata-Alandi roads. The contractor works for 3-4 days and stops for a few days,” he said.

Deshmukh said permissions would be issued after assessing the impact on traffic. “We will ensure that any road restrictions do not cause additional congestion,” he said. The move has come under fire from residents and industrialists, who said this should have been done before the monsoon instead of waiting for road conditions to worsen. Kailas Yelawande, a resident of Nighoje village, said road works started during the monsoon only after voices were raised about the pitiful condition of the infrastructure in the industrial hub. “We are now taking up the works on priority and aim to complete them at the earliest,” he said. Yelawande said roads were repaired annually, but poor quality of the work meant the problems recurred every monsoon, with some roads becoming non-motorable. “Some of these roads are key links for companies in the MIDC … we hope the authorities ensure better-quality work this time,” an industrialist, who did not wish to be named, said.
Work is also under way on a stretch passing through Charholi between Alandi-Markal Road and Alandi Road, but PMRDA stated one-way traffic would not be needed there. “Work is inconsistent. However, a senior PMRDA official supervising the works blamed the monsoon for the delay. The condition of roads in and around Chakan has been a concern for long, but was in sharp focus recently after several industrial units threatened to relocate if conditions did not improve. This prompted the chief minister to task the district collector with coordinating with various agencies and overseeing efforts to improve the infrastructure. Download the TOI App.
