Kanpur: Police arrested three members of a counterfeit currency racket and seized fake notes worth Rs2.04 lakh along with printing equipment and other material. Police identified Sher Singh, who studied up to Class 5, as the alleged mastermind of the racket. Police said around 15 criminal cases, mainly theft, pickpocketing and other offences, were registered against the accused.
Police said the accused mainly circulated small-denomination counterfeit notes in limited quantities, allegedly taking advantage of crowds at Kanpur Central railway station and other railway stations and markets in nearby districts. The seizure included counterfeit Rs500 notes and fake currency in other denominations. He allegedly printed the counterfeit notes using a computer, a high-quality printer and imported paper. Names of some associates also surfaced during questioning, and efforts were underway to trace and arrest them.
ACP (Headquarters/Crime) Sankalp Sharma on Thursday said that acting on a tip-off, a joint team of SOG/Crime Branch and Railbazar police arrested Somil Gupta of Jalaun, Roshan Ali of Moolganj in Kanpur and Sher Singh of Unnao.
The gang reportedly offered Rs10,000 in fake notes in exchange for Rs3,000 in genuine currency. Preliminary investigation revealed that the accused had been circulating counterfeit currency for the past three to four months.
