Kanpur: Residents of about 20 flood-hit villages in Unnao, including Jajmau and Shuklaganj, are using makeshift thermocol boats to cross inundated areas and collect essentials, alleging no help from the administration.
Boat operator Anil Nishad said he was ferrying people from the highway to villages about 5km to 6km away, where roads were under up to 10 feet of water. Residents said Ganga had risen similarly for several years, repeatedly forcing them to devise ways to move within their villages. Resident Naved said villagers were making thermocol boats capable of carrying about 200kg for local travel. Mohammad Shafiq said floodwater had entered his house and the electricity supply had been cut off. Residents, including small children, were struggling to obtain food, he said. A farmer, Anil said he was operating the boat to help residents.
Women were seen rowing the improvised boats with sticks, while children travelled through floodwaters despite the risks. Download the TOI App.
