The state govt declared snake bite a notifiable disease on Aug 18, making timely reporting, monitoring, preventive measures and updating information about storage centres of anti-snake venom vaccine necessary. Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar : In the wake of death of three school girls due to snake bite in Gadchiroli district recently, the tribal development department has decided to launch a special ‘Snake Bite Awareness and Prevention Campaign’ from Sept 19 to Sept 26 in all its govt and aided ashram schools, including Eklavya model residential schools and hostels. Commissioner (in charge) of tribal development department, Gopichand Kadam said the health and safety of tribal students is the govt’s top priority. It will help save lives by providing proper response in emergency and will inculcate scientific temper among students,” a release said quoting Kadam. “These guidance sessions will be organised through the digital studio of the tribal development department,” Kadam said.
“The special campaign will create awareness about snake bite among thousands of students and staff in remote ashram schools. The tribal development department has asked headmasters, hostel superintendents and matrons to update emergency contact information every three months, including contacts of nearest health institutions where anti-snake venom is available or stored, emergency transport arrangement, and contacts of locals. Under the campaign, special awareness sessions will be organised in schools and hostels with the cooperation of local snake rescuers, snake experts, the health and forest department. Students will be guided on maintaining safe distance from snakes, primary care after snake bite, avoiding contact with the snake, and steps to immediately shift a snake bite victim to the nearest health centre.
