T’puram: Ten films exploring public spaces and human lives in cities will be screened under the ‘Nagari’ package at the 18th International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala (IDSFFK), to be held from Sept 25 to 30 at Kairali, Sree and Nila theatres.

Curated around the theme ‘Public Realm in Urban India’, the package explores how people from different castes, classes, age groups and genders interact in streets, markets and playgrounds, while examining how urban development includes or excludes communities. The films include ‘Mahadwar’, which looks at the loss of street life in the name of development, and ‘Mauj Ni Khoj’, which follows young Muslim men in Bhuj, Gujarat, finding spaces of friendship amid social restrictions. ‘Pakdam Pakdai’ portrays children selling balloons at Agra’s Sadar Market, while ‘Hissa’ focuses on migrant brothers working as street barbers in Mumbai. Malayalam film ‘Manaveeyam’, directed by Sreekanth Sivaswamy, Rajesh R and Nitin R, captures how Manaveeyam Veedhi in Thiruvananthapuram evolved into an inclusive cultural space through public participation. ‘Phool Gari’, ‘Pascal Premier League’, ‘How Much Space Does a Firefly Take?’, ‘In Search of Humans’ and ‘Through the Dappled Light’ are the other films.
