Varanasi: A police constable was suspended and an FIR registered against him after he allegedly stopped a 14-year-old Class 9 student returning home from coaching and sexually harassed her near Lalganj outpost under Dokati police station limits in Ballia on Friday evening.

Constable Pankaj Guptf led the spot after the incident, with police teams carrying out raids to arrest him. Ballia SP Om Vir Singh suspended Gupta with immediate effect after taking serious note of the alleged incident.

She said she initially did not tell anyone due to social stigma but informed her family on Friday. Circle officer Alok Gupta said the girl accused Gupta of harassing her near Lalganj outpost. In her complaint, the girl said Gupta had been trying to approach her for three days, asking for her mobile number whenever he found her alone. An FIR was registered against him under relevant sections. When she was returning home from coaching on her bicycle, the constable allegedly stopped her at a deserted spot and touched her inappropriately. The girl raised an alarm, after which her father and nearby villagers rushed towards the spot. The constable allegedly fled, leaving his motorcycle behind. Download the TOI App.
